SPOTLIGHT by SparkDojo is a global community dedicated to solving the most deep-rooted political, economic, and social issues that Japan has struggled with for a long time. We invite experts from various industries, disciplines, and cultures to cast light from different angles onto a seemingly unsolvable issue. How would a cultural anthropologist solve Japan’s sinking birthrate and rapidly aging population? How would a neurologist tackle gender inequality in Japan? What new ideas or perspectives can experts from fields that are not directly related to the issue offer? Our goal is to take a new look at Japan’s oldest, most intractable problems and offer creative solutions through engagement and collaboration.

This event is a bilingual event open to anyone interested in learning new things, solving issues, and connecting with people from different backgrounds.

This is the second event of this series, and we will be discussing the issue of \"Gender Equality\" in Japan. Japan has long lagged behind other countries in the World Economic Forum's annual report on gender equality, and the recently published 2018 report ranked the country 110th out of 149 countries; Japan still remains the worst-ranked of all G7 countries.

The country has also been slow to embrace the global #MeToo movement, and backlash was fierce against the women who broke their silence. A 2017 human rights report noted that sexual harassment in the workplace remains \"widespread\" in Japan, and the recent admission by Tokyo Medical University that it had lowered women applicants’ entrance exam scores shows that the issue is pervasive and complex.

Japan is certainly not the only country struggling with female empowerment. However, it cannot be denied that the issue contains unique cultural and societal components that make it such an uphill battle. At this event, we aim to discuss and develop new perspectives and solutions so that Japan can make continued progress on gender equality.

文化人類学者だったらどんな少子高齢化対策を考えるのか？脳科学者は日本の男女不平等の状況をどうみるのか？背景の異なるパネリスト達が専門外の問題に対してどのような考察をするのか？直接的には関わっていないからこその斬新なアイディアやアプローチが出てくるかもしれません。イベント中はパネリストにはもちろんのことオーディエンスにも参加いただき、英語でインタラクティブに、共同作業を通じて問題に対する解決の糸口を探ります。

今回のテーマは「男女平等・男女同権」。世界経済フォーラムの「世界ジェンダー・ギャップ報告書2018」によると日本はなんと149ヶ国中110位という結果でG7の中でも最下位でした。
昨年も東京医科大学が入学試験で女性受験者の得点を改竄していたとの報道があったり、2017年には世界的に広がった#MeTooも日本国内ではあまり広まりませんでした。このようにまだまだ存在する男女不平等という社会問題の解決に向け一人ひとりができることを考えるきっかけにしていただければと思います。
